Cooking – Under the Sea

This week I got the opportunity to help a friend make fish tacos, and it was a blast! I am so excited to know that it is not as tough as I thought it would be, which means that I will be able to do it again on my own! I have always wanted to cook fish because it is so much better for you than some other forms of protein. In my family, we work a lot, and I mean A LOT with beef and chicken. We are a big meat family, and we always have been, so I have gotten the opportunity to cook and create with beef and chicken multiple times throughout my lifetime, but fish is a rarity in my household. We are Catholic, so we abstain from eating meat during Lent on Fridays, which means that we usually eat a fast-food fish sandwich, cheese pizza, or tuna casserole. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love all of these things, but I have always wondered what it would be like to feel like eating fish is an exciting and tasty thing rather than a burden!

I have seen quite a few episodes of cooking shows on Food Network that are centered around cooking fish, and a lot of them include Tilapia. I think that this is because the taste of Tilapia is said to pair well with a lot of other flavors, including the Mexican Crema, which is similar to sour cream, guacamole, and lime. Because of my love for Mexican food, this was a no-brainer for me! If I can eat fish in a way that is filled with Mexican flavor, why not?! Luckily, it was easy to do, and it was delicious!

I think that my friend, Sam, had a lot more knowledge when it came to working with fish, because she handled it like a pro. I have always been grossed out by the texture of raw fish because as a kid, I always went fishing with my dad, and my brothers thought that it was a really fun thing to do to throw the fish at me or make me hold it as it was flopping around. Traumatic as this was, I somehow do not hate fish, only the way that they feel (and smell). The taste of it is amazing, though, and I recommend that everyone gives it a try! Fish can be prepared in multiple ways, but fish tacos with lettuce, sour cream, guacamole, and lime is the way that we chose to do it, and let me tell you, it will not be the last time that I do it!

Until next week,

Kayla

Kayla, all this food talk is making me hungry! Looks like you’re doing well! How did you cook the fish? I know many people bake and some fry, but it depends on the person and honestly not quite sure how you make it when it comes to fish tacos. Keep it up and can’t wait to see what else you have in store to cook.

Wow it looks like you had a good time cooking fish tacos! I have to agree with you that my family tends to cook with chicken or beef as I think we just aren’t used to eating fish on a regular basis, also because of the price of fish! But I do think it can be a really fun addition to cooking a meal! Thanks for sharing.

Kayla, I’m glad to hear that this cooking experience was a success! I tend to never cook fish due to the fact that it is not my favorite thing to eat. I would really like to try fish tacos, seems like they would be tasty! Thanks for sharing your experience!
